Definition Of Social Media Marketing
In the simplest terms the definition of social media marketing is using any type of social media for the purpose of marketing your business. The next question of course is how would you use social media for your business or is it even important to do so.
We have special software that we use at our ad agency to help us come up with good search terms for various websites that we make. For example if we were going to make a website about social media marketing (which we did) we would want to know about similar terms people have recently searched for that are related to this topic. We couldn't believe what we found. In the month that we did this research we found that there were over 3,000,000 searches for things related to social media. We take this to mean that the business owners who don't invest in a social media marketing plan are going to be left behind by everyone else who takes this seriously. This is only a small sampling of the searches that have been conducted related to social media. What is interesting to us is that thousands of the searches are related to hiring someone to handle your social media marketing. Bigger companies are creating new jobs for people who are experienced in social media marketing. Other companies are hiring a company (like ours) to handle their social media marketing for them.

Social media as a group is but one channel of any multi-channel marketing program. And viewed as a group of tools, there would not be any one consistent roadmap you would put into place. Rather, you would want to start by defining the target audience and then mapping not only where that audience consumes media, but also what is the most appropriate media where the message would be seen as more credible. If you are targeting an audience that is more professional, you may look to certain places like LinkedIn and target more niche blogs. For a younger set, MySpace may be the way to go as well as other (different) niche online conversations. Once you have that mapped, you can then place the emphasis on the certain tools you have at your disposal. Blog outreach may work best for one crowd, but you want to hedge your bets and continue your message to include social network sites and bolster that with search. It's all in where your target audience is at the moment you want them to consume your message.
