Limited Access - No Internet

You are here because you bought a Netgear WN2000RPT and followed the directions and now you have Limited Access or a No Internet Access message. No worries! I had the same exact problem and was ready to throw this thing out but I found how to make it work. I will show you step by step directions to solve the No Internet Access Limited Connectivity problems. I went on to Netgear Forums after I searched for "Netgear WN2000RPT No Internet Access" and "Netgear WN2000RPT Limited Access". Before I found the solution I was convinced this thing would never work. I tried calling Netgear but I bought a REFURB so they told me I'd have to pay for support to resolve the No Internet Access or Limited Connectivity problem. However once I emailed Netgear Support then I got the reply below which was very simple and it works!

Netgear WN2000RPT Setup Instructions

Maybe since I purchased a refurbished Netgear WN2000RPT it didn't come up with setup instructions but once I emailed support they quickly responded with the info below and it worked immediately.

Do this setup and your Netgear WN2000RPT range extender will work:

1. With the help of a paper clip, press the reset button on the back of the extender for 20 seconds (please refer to the label on the bottom of the router for reset button location). Release the reset button after 20 seconds and turn off the router. Turn the router on after few seconds.
2. Connect the extender to the computer with an Ethernet cable. Make sure that there is no connection between your router and the computer either wired or wireless. (I did this part by turning off the antenna to my laptop)
3. Open a browser to start the Smart Wizard.
4. Please select your Preferred Language and click on continue.
5. Let the Extender detect the list of networks available in the locality.
6. Select your network and note down the security assigned for your network and click on continue
7. Type in the security key for your network, please note that if you have WPA security assigned on your network type the network key in passphrase box and if you have WEP security setup on your network type in the network key in the Key1 box and click on continue. (Read this one carefully)
8. Assign a name for the Extender as per your choice, also make sure that option “Use the Same security and passphrase as those for the existing network” is checked and then click on continue.
9. Let the smart wizard establish the connection. On the next screen Click on the button ”I have connected to the extender network” and click on continue.
10. Now click on the finish button to close the page.
11. It should ask you to save the page as bookmark, please save the page for future use.
12. Now open a new browser and check if you are online. (turn your antenna back on)
13. You can now unplug the Ethernet cable from the extender and scan for the SSID of the extender and connect to it using the same network key as for you existing router.

Netgear WN2000RPT Setup

The most important part of the Netgear WN2000RPT setup is that you should NOT just plug it in and use the setup wizard. The setup does not make it clear what you should do when you get to the page with Key 1, Key 2, Key 3 & Key 4. If you follow the directions above which I got by emailing to ask about Netgear WN2000RPT setup then it will work the first time without any problem at all. Just read the Netgear WN2000RPT setup instructions above carefully first and then go through the step by step setup instructions slowly, one at a time and be sure you do exactly what it says. If you follow the directions above you will find that you can do your Netgear WN2000RPT setup without any problem at all.

Need more help? Don't call me! I only know that this worked for me and it was super easy to follow the directions. I don't work for Netgear and I'm not really a techie.

I own a Florida ad agency.

Netgear WN2000RPT Setup - Did this work for you?

Hello all,

I know they are all unhappy with the unit. I can say I am very pleased with the unit.

3 I have around the house and never had any problems with what is being reported here.

The only problem I had and still have is that the equipment to a WIFI connection at 1 to 4 hours is lost with the ISP Router.

Entertained with the other two this is not happening.

After several tests and many wasted hours trying to solve the problem, I made an update to the latest version of fireware and the problem remains.

What can I do more.

On the Netgear WN2000RPT I didn't see any way to update the firmware. Mine loses the signal about once every other day or so. No big deal, I shut it off and turn it back on and then it's fine. I'm just glad that I no longer have that limited access and no internet connection problem.

I have the same problem here in good olf Europe with that device. Even newest firmware from Netgear web page does not solve this problem (which is often discussed in other forums - could be a hw or sw design problem). So switch the WN2000RPT off and on automatically (by a clock timer during night) could be a solution. Or exchange it at your dealer against a new one, maybe you have more luck with the next device.

That's a great idea! You could use a timer that typically is used to put lights on and off to restart the Netgear WN2000RPT once each night. Thanks!

Great Guide! Read some other horror stories in forums about the problem setting this up with WPA. This guide worked for me. Latest firmware can be found here:

Yes that Netgear WN2000RPT limited access, no internet access message almost drove me crazy too. This fixed it first time around.

Hey man, I have to say thanks... A whole lot. I never thought that this would work as I have WEP but I just followed the directions and it works perfectly!
